Allergen sensitizations in southern Italy: a 5-year retrospective study in allergic respiratory patients.

چکیده
The assessment of the distribution of allergen skin test sensitizations is highly recommended for the optimal management of allergic respiratory conditions. We aimed at evaluating the distribution of allergen sensitizations in individuals with asthma and/or rhinitis in the Southern region of ltaly, and at exploring whether changes in the frequency of allergen sensitizations occurred after a 5-year period. Demographic data and skin prick test sensitizations to allergens from asthmatics and/or rhinitis attending the Division of Respiratory Diseases, University of Palermo, Italy in 2005 (Phase 1) and in 2010 (Phase 2) were extrapolated and retained for analysis. A total of 2033 allergic respiratory patients were included (1002 in Phase 1 and 1031 in Phase 2). In both investigations, the most prevalent allergen sensitization was towards Parietaria; however, a significant reduction in the rate of prevalence after 5 years was recorded (from 60% to 48% of skin test positive patients, p < 0.0001). Up to one out of two subjects showed sensitization to dust mites in both Phases. Interestingly, Cypress pollen sensitization almost doubled from Phase 1 (17%) to Phase 2 (29%; p < 0.0001). Overall, the mean number of skin test sensitizations for each patient increased from 2.7 +/- 1.6 in Phase 1 to 3.1 + 1.8 in Phase 2 (p < 0.0001). The present findings confirm the prevalent role of Parietaria sensitization in the allergic population of the Mediterranean area of Southern Italy, and document the increase of Cypress sensitization. These observations could contribute to a proper management of chronic allergic respiratory conditions in this region.

Analysis of new respiratory allergies in patients monosensitized to airborne allergens in the area north of Milan.
BACKGROUND A recent study carried out in North of Milan, an area that was recently colonized both by birch and ragweed pollen, showed that subjects developing allergies to these "new" allergens were much older than those becoming allergic to "traditional" airborne allergens, which suggests that predisposition to develop respiratory allergies is probably allergen-specific, persists throughout li...
متن کاملPrevention of new sensitizations in monosensitized subjects submitted to specific immunotherapy or not. A retrospective study.
BACKGROUND Specific immunotherapy is the only currently available allergen-orientated treatment able to modify the natural history of respiratory allergic diseases. Safety and clinical efficacy of this treatment are well documented, but evidence about the ability to reduce new sensitizations is still poor. OBJECTIVE We report a retrospective study conducted in order to assess the prevention o...
متن کاملFeatures of sensitization to airborne allergens among extra-European immigrants living in 2 distinct areas of Northern Italy.
BACKGROUND Extra-European immigrants are increasingly seen in allergy clinics. In view of their different genetic background they represent an opportunity to investigate the dynamics of sensitization to airborne allergens. OBJECTIVE We investigated the pattern of airborne sensitization among allergic extra-European immigrants living in two areas of northern Italy. METHODS Extra-European imm...
متن کاملKnowledge of their own allergic sensitizations in asthmatic patients and its impact on the level of asthma control.
BACKGROUND Asthma guidelines recommend the adoption of allergen avoidance measures (AAM). To do so, patients need to know their own allergies. However, this degree of knowledge has not yet been assessed. The aims of this study were to determine, in allergic asthma patients: i)the degree of knowledge of their own allergic sensitizations; ii)the percentage of those who knew all their allergies an...
متن کاملThe prevalence of respiratory allergens in patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis in Ardabil province
Background: Because of geographic variation and regional types of allergens, it is recommended that allergists identify common allergens in their area of activity. In the present study, the prevalence of respiratory allergens in patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis was investigated. Methods: This study is descriptive and retrospective. The required data of this study were extracted from ...
